Interview: designing political-military games
January 3, 2022 9 Comments
Last year I did an interview about my games and thoughts about game design with the group “Anti-Imperialist Action Ireland” (because they asked nicely). I prefer to do interviews by email but they would have liked a live event, so we compromised by having a computer voice read the transcript quickly while a Terry Gilliam drawing wobbled its jaw up and down.
If this is too alarming an image for you, you can read the transcript at anti-imperialist-action-ireland.com/blog/2022/01/03/political-military-board-game-design-with-brian-train/
Excellent- I’ll enjoying watch that later.
Cheers,
Pete.
They slowed down the audio a bit from the first upload… but you can read along on the transcript if you don’t believe it!
Good deal Brian. Linking up politics and war… I like this…and several of the items below–especially the one on Russia-Germany WWII.
I’ll definately watch this video when I get to the house. I spent some of December putting an optional rule together (that and a past college football sim’s entire season) and all. Man, writing and proofing is never easy, but I love the results.
Hope you and your wife are doing well as always.
I was just wanting to say ‘hi’ and Happy New Year to you.
I’ll check out your page here more later today and this week.
Take care.

Linking up politics and war is what my design career (or perhaps it’s a careen) is all about!
I hope you enjoy me as a Terry Gilliam drawing. If I were smart enough I would create a wobbling-jaw GIF of that image and use it as my avatar in online meetings.
Thanks and happy everything to you too – I worked on a new design over the holidays but acquired a sprained finger and tendinits so the writing and proofing was even less fun than it usually is (and it isn’t).
Yeah. I understand. I got back into Panzer Leader, Brian. I worked on an optional rule. Dana knows about it.
It’s just nothing more than just sprinkling in some small fighting during the movement phase with US armor that had the gyro device.
I finally posted the John Cooper PL counters on Board Game Geek with this approval of course. He seemed delighted though, so why did it take me a half year to get around to it?
Sorry about your hand. Just rest it, Brian. You and I—we’re still a little young, so I think you just need to let it sit for 24 hours. That should do the trick.
I’ll get back with you soon things.
Take care

For me, the Terry Gilliam talking head is an improvement. My mom told me early on that I had a face for radio. Happy New Year!
Thanks, I guess!
Happy happy to you too.
Brian,
Please check your gmail. I have sent you an interview request that may be of interest. Thank you.
And thank you!
